Garden Arch

Use A Garden Arch To Add Character To Your Garden

If you have a garden and want to add character try adding a garden arch. The garden arch can be used at the entry and if the garden is fenced, then it can even be used to contain the gate or the arch ach can have benches that sit underneath the shade. It is an inviting place for guests to sit and visit a while in the shade.

After installing the arch, you will need to choose the plants you want to grow on the arch to provide the shade.

A classic choice for a garden arch is roses. The arch will need to have two rose bushes, one planted on either side of the arch. The roses should be climbing roses and not long stemmed. You could choose two identical rose bushes or you could choose two of coordinating colors. You will need to train the roses to the arch and keep branches that will not train to the arch trimmed.

A second choice for the arch is to use grapevines. These vines have large leaves that will provide a good shade over the arch and will also provide fruit in season. The fruit also will add color to the arch.

You can choose almost any plant that grows as a vine on a garden arch. The plant leaves give a shady place for your garden visitors.

If you want to use annuals for your garden arch, they will quickly cover the arch during the first season. However thy will die back with the first frost and have to be re-planted every year unless you live in a climate where there is no danger of frost. When you need to re-plant you may need to remove the older plants before planting again.
