Herb Garden

An Herb Garden Is Both Attractive And Useful

When you cook with fresh herbs it makes a world of difference to your culinary attempts. They have better flavor than their dried counterpart and are also better for you. When you grow your own herb garden you can rest assure that your herbs will be the freshest you can get and that they will be completely chemical free. They are also an attractive addition to any garden, balcony, window box or home.

The best thing to do to get started is to purchase the basic five herbs which are used most often. These are mint, parsley, sage, rosemary and basil. Fresh basil pesto is delicious! As your garden grows, you can add chives, garlic chives, celery, thyme, oregano, and many others.

While most herbs can be grown together in pots, the garden or window boxes, mint cannot. It grows like a weed and will overtake all your other plants, so keep it on a self contained container, in the garden you can even use an old tire for this purpose.

Herbs are not only used for cooking, they have healing powers and they can also be used to make different teas. Mint tea is absolutely delicious and it can be drunk hot or iced. Mint also makes a good addition to enhance the flavor of other teas, ice cream and other desserts.

Herbs grown in pots; should be potted with a good chemical free organic potting soil. The pots themselves need to be 6 – 12″ deep. The bottom quarter of the pots has to be filled with stones, which allows the soil to drain effectively. Purchase seedlings and pot these as it is simpler than growing your own seeds, and you can use the herbs almost immediately. Window boxes need to be lined with plastic to prevent leaks.
