What Are Koi Pond Filters?

Are you interested in keeping koi fish? These small, Japanese fish are extremely colorful and beautiful. However, if you plan to house some in a backyard pond, as many people love to do, you are going to have to buy koi pond filters, pumps, and other equipment to keep the pond and fish healthy.  Here, we will talk only about the filters.

Koi fish need clean water in order to remain healthy. However, they tend to eat a lot, which leads to mass excretion. In the wild, this is not much of a problem, because the koi simply move on to another water source when their home becomes too polluted. However, this is not an option for captive koi living in a man-made pond.

This is where the filter comes in. Koi pond filters eliminate waste from the bottom of the pond. This keeps the water clean and the koi healthy. Waste or other dirt can cause koi to pick up deadly parasites, easily wiping out your whole koi population; this problem is completely avoided by purchasing a koi pond filter. In addition, when the water is clean and clear, sunlight can reflect off your fish’s gorgeous, multicolored skin.

Koi pond filters work by breaking down toxic compounds into harmless bio-products. Koi waste products, for example, contain nitrites. These chemicals help algae to grow; the algae, in turn, excrete chemicals that suffocate the koi. Pond filters remove the nitrite-rich waste products from the water or break them down into less harmful compounds so the fish can survive.
