Landscape Lighting – Tips For Illuminating Your Property

Choosing landscape lighting for any type of property is an exciting, fun experience. The market is so rich with new products and concepts and flooded with innovative technologies, making it one of the fastest expanding markets for consumers. The difference between a property without any type of lighting and well designed lighting system is simply amazing.

Yet, it can be very difficult to choose, especially if you are getting lots of ideas and must-haves through online retailers that offer more products than a brick and mortar store could ever stock.

Instead of getting frustrated, start thinking about the specific areas you want to add lighting features to, and then shop for each individual area one at one time. You will likely need different types of lights for different areas, depending on several factors.

Do you want large sprays of lights or smaller beams from a spotlight type fixture? How well does this area need to be illuminated? Is there a particular distance that you want between each light?

These questions can considerably narrow down your options. For example, you may know that for one area of the property you want lights that deliver sprays of light over larger areas that can be placed rather far apart and still offer a bright illumination. Many lights that you like will not meet these requirements.

You will also have to make a decision about how you want to power the lights for different areas of the property. Those that operate off of light bulbs will require some maintenance to keep them functioning, though putting them on a timer that will limit how often they turn on can help the bulbs to last much longer. If you go with something that needs wired into the ground, it will take a lot more to install.

You can also go with solar lighting that will require no maintenance or extra expense at all. Some of these lights give off extremely powerful rays when placed in areas that get a lot of sun during the day.

Before you make a purchase, check what type of material the fixtures are made out of. You want something that is going to be extremely durable so it can withstand the changes in weather for many years without rusting or otherwise falling apart. Solid brass and cast aluminum are great choices.

To give an example of how to select fixtures that make a statement on your property, consider the best options for lighting a path through a garden or around a large flowerbed.

You could go with small spotlights that will give adequate light for nighttime strolls or for sitting on a back deck and looking out to the flowers at night, or you could go with something a bit more decorative. There are some very unique designs available that look pleasing when combined with large groups of flowers.

Manufacturers are now producing elegant lights that stand tall but have a downward swooping neck that spays light on the ground. The light heads are often designed like lilacs or tulips and fit nicely with flower arrangements. Of course, these will cost a bit more than smaller lights that just add light.

Your landscape lighting choices will largely reflect the property you are illuminating. More whimsical and solar powered lighting can be used for a small home, while more technical lights that serve an exact purpose tend to be chosen for security purposes around a commercial building.
