Solar Fountain Brings Serenity And Beauty
Perhaps you’ve seen a lovely fountain rising up from your neighbor’s backyard pond. Yet you see no wires and hear no pump, and you wonder how your neighbor’s creating that cool and refreshing spraying. Chances are, your wise neighbor has installed a solar fountain.
Solar fountains are becoming the garden accessory chosen by many to create a soothing earth-friendly sanctuary. A garden pond with a floating solar fountain not only gives pleasure to the people watching, it circulates and aerates the pond as well, providing life-giving oxygen to aquatic plants and pond creatures, such as fish.
In the simplest terms, a solar fountain is powered by a small panel made up of Photovoltaic cells. Made mainly of silicon (the main ingredient of sand), photovoltaic cells collect the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity. The solar panel powers the fountain’s water pump, which in turn makes the water flow.
The water slows down or stops if something keeps the sunlight from shining on the fountain’s solar panel. A cloud, a shadow, a person, an animal, even a tree or plant can interfere with a solar panel’s operation. As a result, some solar fountains also come with an electrical connection that can be plugged into a standard outlet. However, many people prefer their solar fountains to be powered only by sunlight in order to save on electricity, and are willing to live with periodic stoppages.
Solar fountains usually are easily set up in one’s yard or garden. Some solar fountain models work from solar panels installed directly into the fountain’s body; others have separate panels that are set up several feet away to get maximum exposure to sunlight. Photovoltaic cells typically are very thin and don’t have much storage capacity, so models with the solar panels built in usually must be in constant sunlight for the water to flow. However, models with a larger, separate component can have more space for internal batteries to store sun energy, enabling the fountain to work longer.
